Literally translated to "old castles," Schlôsser Alt is the quintessential Düsseldorf Altbier. A well-balanced, bitter yet malty German ale this beer is clean and smooth with nutty flavours and a rather dry finish. It's so refreshing it's a good thing it comes in bigger bottles!
Pours a clear dark amber with a tiny beige head. Sweet aroma with roasted malt, burned caramel, chocolate and nuts. Taste is very pleasant. Roasted malts, nuts, nutmeg, chocolate, some vanilla, and cream. Fairly faint bitter ending. Palate is well rounded and very chewy, yet subtle and creamy. Earth tones reinforce the bitter ends from the hops, a really enjoyable Alt bier.
The Altbier style is a good style to start with if you’re looking to take the leap from standard lagers to a darker, fuller-bodied beer. While it fermented with ale yeast, due to the relatively cool temperatures of the Düsseldorf area the original altbier conditioned at temperatures close to that of lagers—a method that is used to this day.
