Durham - Diabolus Stout
Diabolus from The Durham Brewery is a dark ale, an Oak Aged Russian Stout matured in an oak whisky hogshead.
Tasting Notes: Whisky, port, sherry and beer rolled into one experience. A big alcoholic raisin and whisky aroma is followed by a dry, clean and smooth winey sipping liquid gold. Previous incarnations have been sour. This batch is the first Diabolus to be matured in a whisky hogshead and, despite attempts with brett and a number of gueuze yeasts this little gem is not sour, rather it is dry, smooth and extremely easy to drink. After 14 months in the wood we decided to test. The smoothness and complexity were astounding. The ABV was obviously high and despite our correct guess at 12% we sent some of to a lab to be verified after bottle-conditioning.
This is a very limited edition with one hogshead producing 750 bottles. Needless to say, the cask is full again with the next Diabolus.
